Arcade games have a history as long as video games themselves. In fact, arcade games were the first video games to be used commercially. While the first arcade game was a simple Tennis game, arcade games have evolved into complex games with amazing graphics and stories.

The first commercial coin-operated arcade game was built by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann on January 1, 1947.

The two were engineers who had worked on radar technology during World War II. The game they created was based on the concept of Ping Pong as opposed to tennis but it was not very successful. In 1971, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney developed Computer Space which sold 1,500 units at $1,095 each. This game is considered the first arcade game ever and it was a commercial failure because it was too difficult for most people to understand how to play it.

In 1972, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney co-founded Atari Inc., an arcade video game company that began creating popular arcade games such as Pong (1972), Super Pong (1975), Combat (1977), Asteroids (1979) and Centipede (1980).

In 1978, Taito released one of the most popular arcade games of all time called Space Invaders.

This is a shift from the traditional way that most people used to play video games.

In the past, video games were usually played using consoles.

The video game player would then use joysticks or other control devices to play the game.
