History

The first game to feature car-like controls was Gran Trak 10, an arcade game released by Atari in 1974. While earlier racing games (e.g., Indy 800) allowed players to compete against artificial intelligence opponents, Gran Trak 10 was the first where each player controlled a vehicle (in this case a car). The game featured a three-quarter perspective track behind the wheel of a car. The control setup was both unique and intuitive: steering was accomplished by pressing with the left hand while gas and brake pedals were operated by the right foot, while shifting gears were done with the left foot (there were two pedals for forward gears and one for reverse). The force feedback steering wheel was patented in 1986.
