The COVID safe app is a new contact tracing app developed by the Australian Government to slow the spread of COVID-19. The app works in the background of your phone helping to identify close contacts who may have been exposed to COVID-19, should someone test positive for the virus. A 'close contact' is defined as someone who has been within 1.5 metres of another person for more than 15 minutes, or visited the same place at the same time as someone who has tested positive to COVID-19.

The app uses Bluetooth technology to securely record when you meet another user of the app. These records are stored on your phone and deleted after 21 days. If you test positive for COVID-19, you can choose to share your records with state health officials via a secure portal, so they can contact people you have met recently and advise them about the risk of exposure and what steps to take next in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All data is only used for official purposes and will be deleted from government systems after 30 days.
