hackers targeted US and korean firms uncovered

Recent news that hacking efforts are targeted at US and Korean companies has caused a flurry of reaction from the government. The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have begun investigations into cybercrimes. In an interview with CBS News, former NSA Director, Michael Hayden, was asked if the attacks on US companies is part of a foreign hacking strategy. He replied, "I don't know. I don't see it as being a hacking strategy. These are just pearls."

 

While he explained that the intrusions are not part of an overall hacking strategy, he acknowledged that the focus of these recent cyberattacks is on US companies. "I don't know why the focus is on US companies. I would be very surprised if it was because there are more US companies than any other country in the world. If they want to try to protect everybody they can, I suppose that's one way of protecting everybody. But do we want to go after every company in the world?" he said.

 

Hayden suggested that the attacks on US firms could be part of a wider Chinese hacking strategy. "I do not know the specific Chinese hacking efforts, but it does seem to me that the Chinese are focusing a lot of their attention on the US. We've had quite a few cyberattacks directed at us, actually, from China," he said. He went on to say that the attacks on US companies "certainly fit the pattern of what they do".

 

The hacking against Korean and US companies uncovered by the news media, however, did not include the kind of widespread, sustained attacks that are characteristic of Chinese hacking. There's no indication that this latest hacking effort is part of a wider plan by the Chinese military or government. It appears to be more of a marketing campaign for software and other items sold on the dark web. It is also unclear whether this attack on the computer systems of these US and Korean companies is related to a previously unknown group of hackers who hacked the systems of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Defense Department.

 

What this all means is that the latest hacking efforts are not part of a grand Chinese plan. No, this is more of the same, only with a different end goal. It appears to be part of a wider concerted cyber campaign to gather intelligence and sell it to the highest bidder. It seems that some cyber attacks are aimed at gathering intelligence to use against rival nation-states such as Iran and North Korea. However, most of the attacks appear to be simply marketing campaigns aimed at collecting personal data and personal bank accounts information from Internet users.

 

One reason that US and Korean companies might have been targeted is that they happened to be selling the same things in the same place. Some hackers attack a corporation to gather information that they can then use for international espionage or political reasons. It is not uncommon for cyber gangs to target companies that make high-tech products that are in popular demand on the high-end Internet market. If you live in the UK or any other English-speaking country, it is easy to assume that every computer is connected to the Internet. This is not true. If you own a PC or laptop, you probably have at least one Internet connection and probably more.

 

In fact, the popularity of PCs and laptops means that there are more computers online than there are people online. A large number of UK and Korean companies' personal data is stored on these types of machines. A well-known cause of cyberattacks is spam, which is spamming the Internet with advertising messages. Most people ignore pop-ups and messages from unknown senders. But when a PC is infected by viruses, it will often display annoying advertisements from different senders until the user prompts the browser to scan the email message.

 

One way that many UK and Korean companies protect themselves from cyber attacks is through firewalls. Companies that make and sell equipment that can be used to hack into computers to make the software available free of charge to customers. When a PC is infected with malware, a security tool called Antivirus Action blocks the virus from running. Sometimes, this type of protection is enough to keep hackers away.
